American Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking military spokesperson, the US military carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
