Multiple Hurt as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts A Delta Airlines Flight Arriving in Sydney

Several people have been injured after a Delta Airlines jet from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by significant turbulence on Friday morning.

Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services said they evaluated a total of five people, and transported three to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that such as spinal discomfort and head pain. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of planes encountering turbulence, with researchers indicating that climate change is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the representative added, clarifying that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

Emergency responders reported they were alerted just only 180 seconds before the plane arrived, and ambulances were standing by on the runway.

The reasons turbulence is becoming more common - and often stronger.

Last year, two dozen individuals sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "considerable" turbulence just a couple of hours into the lengthy trip, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a harrowing brief five-second bout of severe turbulence. A traveler died and dozens were injured, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and crashed back down.

Bumpy air is fairly routine on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of significant turbulence seem to be rising, they are still very rare.

Data suggests that there are approximately 5,000 incidents of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a total of over 35 million flights that now take off globally.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the up and down movements of a plane experiencing rough air masses generate greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - a strong enough force to throw you from your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.

As climate change modifies weather patterns, experts warn that flying could become more turbulent: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are expected to increase the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
