"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
