The global fast-food chain has pulled a Christmas advert produced via generative AI after receiving considerable criticism on social media.

The brief film was produced using AI video tools and was initially released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, audiences online denounced the implementation of AI in the advert. Several labeled it "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This moment is an key lesson as we explore the proper application of Artificial Intelligence," said a representative from the company.

The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of scenarios that might go awry during the Christmas break, with the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Movement of AI-Generated Ads

Campaigns that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a rising trend among prominent brands, especially for the Christmas period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As videos made with current AI video tools are susceptible to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also provoked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising sector, with some observers noting it might affect work for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

Bridge claimed, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then crafted during the edit "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," Bridge asserted. "It was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly criticized, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis received a significant "favorable response" from viewers.

However, various brands have likewise faced criticism for using the technique in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the evolving debate within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between new tools and human craftsmanship.
