The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Mayor
The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
