"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The author likewise desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're far from alone. A host of famous fans have openly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals often show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."

Grammy Nod

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will always be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
